About the project

“Turtle & The Traveler” is an art installation we did in Downsview Park, Toronto, ON. The flags are designed to represent the North (White) and West (Black) directions of the medicine wheel since the flags are in the northwest direction. The first white flag has an image of a traveler; since it was a common route for trade and travel amongst Indigenous people the traveler represents those people. The Turtle on the black flag represents the land (Turtle Island) as well as the wildlife from the area. The turtle’s shell represents a medicine wheel which is there to represent the reason for the colors and the directions, as well as our traditional teachings. Both images are designed to look like petroglyphs from the Eastern Woodlands people.
